I don’t have a problem with gay marriage but I do have a problem with hypocrisy. I think its wonderful that DC and Marvel have decided to add in their two cents about gay marriage and all. But didn’t they say that marriage aged characters and made them less hip for their target audiences not too long ago? Isn’t that the reason why MJ and Peter got their marriage all hulk smashed but JQ? Same with Lois and Clark over in DC! Now all of a sudden marriage is “cool” again as long as its between gay couples? WTF is that all about? So yeah that’s my two cents on the issue and why I just so fed up with Marvel and DC atm.
I agree! It should be equal all around!!
I think the problem in itself is the inherent misogyny of it all. Note that the gay couple getting married are two men, so while Marvel may be making a pro-lgbt statement in that, there is still this idea that if one of the partners is a [human] WOMAN then she must be holding the hero back, or if the female hero is married to a human male, then that must be absurd because she can overpower the male, and we can’t have that, can we? (That is an actual argument used, I kid you not.) So in case we missed the lesson, the only suitable partner in a heterosexual relationship (outside of Animal Man, apparently) for any superhero is another superhero.
Northstar’s marriage is not a statement of any kind as far as I’m concerned. This is a PR stunt. It’s a third tier character few care about getting married to someone that will probably be offed very soon. Northstar himself has been killed repeatedly hasn’t he? He’s a disposable gay, so why not? Marry him off.
Have two major male characters get married*, or have a major character like Captain America or Superman come out in favor of marriage equlaity, then I’ll be impressed.
That said, anytime you start a post with “I don’t have a problem with (insert here), but…” It sounds like that is exactly what you have a problem with.
*I do realize it won’t happen, and I say male characters, because frankly anytime two female characters hook up in comics my default assumption is it is straight male pandering rather than LGBT inclusiveness.
