Miley speaks for us all.

the face omg

Yeah, because Miley Cyrus should be throwing stones. Not that I don’t agree that was a superb diss.

Eh. It’s Justin “Anne Frank would’ve been a Bieliber” Bieber. After that one, Miley’s going to have to work pretty hard to be a worse mess than that little asshole.

I like Miley Cyrus a lot and always have. Her public persona has always been one of confidence, empowerment, facing your fears and following your passions. Her music may not be everyone’s cup of tea (I’m a pop music fan and I think she has a cool voice but YMMV), but since she was a wee teenager, she’s written consistently positive songs about how it’s okay to be flawed and be scared or worried that you’re not good enough and that it doesn’t make you less of a person to fail to live up to other people’s ideals.

Generally speaking, she’s articulate, outspoken, funny, and largely unconcerned with the media’s creepy micro-criticism of her style, her body and her decision-making. I think that is a valuable message to send to young girls.

She is also passionate about LGBT rights, to the extent that she got a tattoo in support of marriage equality last year and rallies her fans to not support companies that donate to anti-gay lobbyists.

Soooo I kinda do think she can afford to throw a stone or two. :)

FACTS ABOUT THINGS:

TUMBLR WAS GETTING TOO EXPENSIVE. THEIR OPTIONS WERE TO EITHER SELL IT OR SHUT IT DOWN.

YAHOO SAYS THEY’RE GOING TO LET IT RUN AS AN INDEPENDENT BUSINESS. IN THEORY, NOTHING WILL CHANGE EXCEPT FOR WHO’S LEGALLY OWNING IT.

NOW EVERYONE CALM DOWN.

This reminds me of all the “OMG, THE SKY IS FALLING” that happened ever 48 hours at LJ. /sigh

If it was getting too expensive to run, then why would Yahoo buy it and let it run as is, as an independent business? Changes obviously have to be made for it to see a profit.

I assume Yahoo did not buy it out of altruism, or as a trophy, they must expect to earn money from it.

More AssHats

Quit spoiling Star Trek Into Darkness for people.

People being angry about ~dem gays~ on Target’s Facebook.

I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.

A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?

It is a big deal because i’m a transman.

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that it’s hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you don’t pass, it’s hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.

Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.

At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didn’t care. Not in the sense that they don’t emotionally care, but that it didn’t matter. I was male and that’s all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.

At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who weren’t sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when you’ve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didn’t ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.

TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.

#GO TARGET #FUCK YES

I love reading stuff like this and I’m sincerely happy that norsegays has a safe and respectful environment in which he can do his job.

Whenever I hear about people or businesses excluding LGBT+ customers or workers, I’m reminded of an incident from when I was very young, around 12 or so, so we’re talking the late 80s/possibly early 90s, which was 20+ years ago. My mother, a woman who is otherwise by no means without her flaws, worked as a freelance cosmetic and skin care consultant for Estee Lauder, and at the time, she had been contracted to work in a Macy’s in Houston, TX. This meant she was there not to sell anything, but to merely help customers find the right skincare and makeup products for them, and the counter salesgirls would finish the sales and do any upsells.

Sometimes after school, my grandparents would drive me to the mall and let me hang out and watch my mom work, which was… mostly boring, because I wasn’t too interested in watching my mom put makeup on people, but gave me lots of opportunities to people-watch, too. And sometimes she’d put makeup on me! Which was fun, for a 12-year-old.

Anyway, on this particular day, a very tall and very striking and (I thought at the time) attractive trans*lady shyly approached the makeup counter to browse the expansive lipstick section. I couldn’t help but stare, not because she was strange-looking to me, because my mother knew other trans*folk and so I did, too, but because she was very made up and was wearing very elegant clothes, and seemed so very glamorous to me, very unlike the people I saw in my every day life at a small-town Texas Catholic school. My mother, however, was not there to sell lipsticks, just do makeovers and facials on people, so she waited for the salesgirls to approach the lady and help her.

And waited.

And waited.

Instead, the two of them - a woman in her 50s and a college co-ed - stood at a distance, staring and eye-rolling and whispering and laughing. The customer noticed - well, we ALL noticed because they weren’t being subtle - and she looked very embarrassed (and in my memory, perhaps a little disappointed), but tried to ignore them as she browsed. My mother must have finally realized no one was going to help her, because she just sort of sighed and charged right on in, introduced herself and started chatting the lady up about lipsticks.

She seemed a little taken aback more than anything at first. Not that I could blame her. She had clearly given up all hope of anyone approaching her, and, well… some of you reading this have met my mother and know she is a very flashy, extroverted, opinionated Latina, fond of costume jewelry and fire-engine-red hair and talking about makeup, so undoubtedly she took this particular customer by surprise on several levels. The tension having been broken, however, I got bored watching them ease into a long, animated conversation about skin types and skin tones and matte vs. shimmer and a bunch of other crap I had (still have) very little interest in and got back to reading my book.

My mother ended up selling her $370 worth of products. At the time? That was a lot of fucking money. She also became a repeat client and referred several of her friends. And when my mother left that Macy’s, the lady followed her to her new location 45 minutes away and patronized her business continually until we moved to another state 3 years later.

The moral of this story is: it not only makes you a shitty person to demean and humiliate and bully and exclude customers and employees for no freaking good reason, it also makes you an inexcusably bad business person.

thebacklot:

How many climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming? If you asked the average person on the street, the response might surprise you. On average, the general public think less than half of climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming. The reality is 97%. There is a huge gap between public perception of the scientific consensus on human-caused global warming and reality.

The consensus gap has real-world consequences. When people correctly understand that climate scientists agree on human-caused global warming, they are more likely to support policy to mitigate global warming. The consensus gap is directly linked to a lack of public support for climate action. This underscores the importance of clearly communicating the consensus and closing the consensus gap.

For over 20 years, opponents of climate action have understood this and attacked the consensus. In 1991, Western Fuels Association conducted a $510,000 campaign to “reposition global warming as theory (not fact)”. To achieve this, they used a few dissenting scientists as spokesmen in order to construct the perception of ongoing scientific debate. More recently, an analysis of opinion editorials about climate change from 2006 to 2010 by conservative columnists observed that the most common climate myth was “there is no consensus.”

A concise summary of the strategy against the consensus is articulated in the infamous 2002 memo to Republicans by political strategist Frank Luntz:

“Voters believe that there is no consensus about global warming in the scientific community. Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly. Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate…”

While fossil fuel companies and conservative columnists argue against consensus, what is the reality? The scientific consensus manifests in a multitude of ways, just as there are many lines of evidence for human-caused global warming.

Two recent studies have sought to measure the level of agreement in the scientific community in different ways and arrived at strikingly consistent results. A 2009 study led by Peter Doran surveyed over 3,000 Earth scientists and found that as the scientists’ expertise in climate change grew, so did the level of agreement about human-caused global warming. For the most qualified experts, climate scientists actively publishing peer-reviewed research, there was 97% agreement.

Alternatively, a 2010 analysis led by William Anderegg compiled a database of scientists from public declarations on climate change, both supporting and rejecting the consensus. Among scientists who had published peer-reviewed climate research, there was 97% agreement.

The consensus on climate change is reflected in the published statements of prestigious scientific organizations throughout the world. Academies of Science from many countries endorse the consensus view, as do many prestigious scientific organizations such as NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Royal Society of the UK.

However, it is worth pointing out that science is not decided by majority vote. This is articulated concisely by John Reisman who says: “Science is not a democracy. It is a dictatorship. It is evidence that does the dictating.”

Scientists must back up their opinions with evidence-based analysis that survives the scrutiny of experts in the field. This means the peer-reviewed literature is a robust indicator of the state of the scientific consensus. Naomi Oreskes conducted the seminal study of peer-reviewed climate research in 2004, surveying the abstracts of papers from 1993 to 2003 matching the search “global climate change”. Oreskes found that out of the 928 papers, none rejected the consensus position that humans have caused most of global warming over the last 50 years.

The scientific consensus is robust, manifesting in the peer-reviewed literature, scientific organisations and surveys of climate scientists. Unfortunately (although luck had nothing to do with it), there is a huge gap between perception and reality. This consensus gap is part of the reason why there is a lack of public support for climate action.

This means closing the consensus gap is one of the low-lying fruit of climate communication. This doesn’t require explaining the intricacies of radiative physics—we just need to clearly communicate that climate scientists agree that humans are causing global warming. How do we achieve this? Ironically, I’ll leave you with another quote from Frank Luntz:

“There’s a simple rule: You say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and then again and again and again and again, and about the time that you’re absolutely sick of saying it is about the time that your target audience has heard it for the first time.”

http://www.wunderground.com/earth-day/2013/closing-the-climate-change-consensus-gap
